Being fired. It’s one of the most confidence-shattering, shame-inducing things that can happen to a professional. And because of that, people rarely talk about their experiences openly, mostly keeping it to their close friends and family members. That means we don’t have a ton of data to work with regarding the experience of being fired from the employee’s perspective. I want to change that with this survey.
If you’ve been fired from a job for any reason, I want to hear about your experience. All of the data will be completely anonymous and will only be viewed by the people analyzing the results.
Let me lay my cards on the table: In my work, I’ve counseled organizations on when to fire people and how to do it to minimize the impact to morale. I’ve been in the room more than a few times when leaders within organizations come up with justifications for firing people when their performance was not the real problem but they need to keep themselves legally safeguarded. I’ve counseled and coached people who have been fired, sometimes for perfectly legitimate reasons and sometimes very unjustly, without being given feedback or a chance to improve. And I’ve been fired myself, so I understand what a traumatic experience it is to go through on a deeply personal level, particularly when you perceive the reasons to be less than above board.
I could tell you anecdote for days, but I don’t have data from experiences outside of those I have direct involvement in.
So, if you’ve been through it, please tell me your story.
I hope to use the information to get a fuller picture of the experience from the perspective of the employee and use the data to help people going through similar experiences, and organizations that I work with to put processes in place that will help prevent someone losing their job when there are better paths to improvement.
And if you know someone who’s been fired, please pass it on.
